Free online word processing - no download necessary!

New free service from Google. Nothing to download to use it, and uploading (or saving to the hard drive) is not necessary. You can save documents on the Writely website by choosing "Publish" from the menu. However, choosing "Save" will prompt you to select a destination on your computer (hard drive or a diskette) which is not possible on our Full Access workstations. However, the Publish option should work fine.

Some nice features - you can track version changes to documents. You can archive. You could upload Word and PDF documents for editing (but not on our Full Access computers.) If you wish, you can share the document with other people and the site allows real-time editing with multiple collaborators. Pick exactly who can access your documents - or keep documents private and share with no one.

Note the privacy issues though - "Writely stores, processes and maintains your documents and previous versions of those documents in order to provide the service to you." Probably no different than free web email though!

I like the portability of the documents - they are there waiting for you to read and edit regardless of your location. It is blogging-friendly too!

Sign up for a free account and give it a test-ride!
