I talked to the head of City Hall branch and unfortunately the new wireless internet service from Toronto Hydro is not working well there. Evidently the overhang in front of the branch seems to interfere with the signal. It works better outside and in buildings directly adjacent to its coverage area. Fingers crossed that it will work well in our branch when it finally arrives! It is supposed to move up as far as College Street around the middle of October.
It is important to know that this is NOT a library initiative and the library has no control over the quality, etc.
If you want more info about this new service, there is a good article in the Toronto Star:
Wireless Internet goes live downtown
If you are out of the One Zone area (nearly all branches won't be in it), you can find free wireless (wifi) on these websites:
WifiFreeSpot
Wireless Toronto
The coolest spots are two parks (not great for winter weather though!):
Massey Harris Park, King Street West
Dufferin Grove Park
Hey, they are ultra cool - they even have a wiki!

An added problem for reception in branches - concrete walls and metal shelving really interfere with the signal, apparently.
