Printing attachments on Full Access public computers

Today a patron could not print an attachment on his Hotmail. The only options was "save" which was not possible on the computer he was using.

I thought I would test the three most common free email providers - Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and GMail (Google Mail).

Hotmail works fine with the Classic interface. The user has the choice of Open or Save. The document opens with Word Viewer. If the patron has the enhanced free version (Windows Live Hotmail), she can switch back by going to Options, More Options, then switch back. After printing her document, she can switch again to Windows Live, if she wishes.

Yahoo Mail "original" version worked fine. Clicking on the attachment name offered Open as well as Save. It opens in Word Viewer which is printable with the original format (assuming it is a Word document). There is a Preview which offers Printable View but you lose the formatting. It looks like the newer version will work too.

GMail allows you to open the document as HTML, as a Google document or Download. Download uses Word Viewer.

If you have more information about this or wish to clarify anything, please do so! This was just a quicky test to satisfy my curiosity about why the patron could not print!

Since we now have Microsoft Word on all our public workstations (except PACs), it is easier to open attachments.

Suggest the patron saves the document to the G drive, then goes to Windows Explorer to open it. That should do the trick. Of course, the saved document disappears when the session is ended.
