In Office 2007, Microsoft introduced a new file format called the Microsoft Open Office XML Format (.docx). This is the default when saving Word documents in the new versions of Office / Word.
However, this format is not compatible with older versions of Microsoft Word and cannot be opened on our computers. So if a patron has a document with a name like resume.docx or resume.docm he will not be able to open on the branch computers.
However, all is not lost! Patrons can save a document on their own computers as .doc even though they have Vista and Microsoft Word (2007 +). Then they can open it on our computers for printing or viewing. If the patron has his or her laptop and has emailed a document for printing, suggest he resave it.
Here's how:
How to save your Word 2007 Documents as .doc instead of .docx
Click the icon in the upper left ofthe screen to access your filemenu options. Choose “Save As” and then “Word 97-2003” to save your document with a .doc extension.
The patron can change the default if they wish so that documents are always saved as .doc.
