Company and stock market information

Leena told me about a couple of recent queries about stock / share prices. It turns out that both were privately held companies, ie, not traded on the stock market.

One way to find out is by using the Business & Company Resource Center in All In One Search (AIOS). Use search by company name. For example, De Beers is a "International and Multinational Private company". Then you don't waste time trying to get the current stock price!

Also, don't assume that the patron knows what they are talking about, when they walk up with an air of confidence and ask for the latest price that the shares of x compnay are trading at! Do the basic research first, to find out whether there even are shares to be publicly traded.

Sometimes a company used to be publicly traded, but is now private.
They may still have a website where you or your patron can read up on the background. There may be a useful link on it, such as "Compnay History" , or "About our Company". or even "Press Releases"

I took the training course on Financial Post Online (available in the branch, not remotely ... but perhaps only district branches).

Lots of great info there about Canadian companies. You can get predecessor and defunct companies too.
