Neighbourhood watch: Nuit Blanche Toronto

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche Toronto , a city-wide celebration of the arts, is taking place tonight, from sunset to sunrise tomorrow. Our branch is near the intersection of three zones (Zone A includes the University of Toronto, Zone B is East of Spadina, and Zone C West of Spadina, with College St. as the common boundary), and there's plenty happening in the neighbourhood. - Check it out!

Several staff members will be venturing forth into the wee (and perhaps not-so-wee) hours, so - who know? - perhaps there'll be reports next week...

Favourite installation (Zone C): "Incursion", by Australian artists Craig Walsh-Brisbane (http://scotiabanknuitblanche.com/detail.html?id=6&zone=C ). It was an amazingly effective video installation projected onto the windows of a storefront, making it look as if the entire window was slowly filling with water; chairs and tables in the window floating to the top; and eventually populated by large fish swimming around.

Runner up: a small video at a Queen St. West gallery, which showed people playing a giant game of tic-tac-toe at a major Queen St. intersection. They'd wait for the lights to change, and take turns dashing out and paint their X or O on the street. A delightful bit of whimsy.

Favourite architecture: the Gladstone Hotel.

Favourite happening in our neighbourhood: the Zone B hub at OCAD, which had an outdoor movie theatre: a "Drive-In" sign, comfy chairs that (literally) rocked, and some interesting short films (including one with Colm Feore).

OCAD also had the cleanest washrooms (on its sixth floor).

Favourite refreshment: sampling six different local varieties of apples at The Cook Book Store (http://www.cook-book.com/contact_us.html ). Local, simple, and soooo good!
