Finally settled in the US. It seems that everyone will win, even local public libraries!
The Authors Guild says:
Readers wanting to view books online in their entirety for free need only reacquaint themselves with their participating local public library: every public library building is entitled to a free, view-only license to the collection.
However, this agreement won't affect Canadians. Google says this about international users:
Because this agreement resolves a United States lawsuit, it directly affects only those users who access Book Search in the U.S.; anywhere else, the Book Search experience won't change. Going forward, we hope to work with international industry groups and individual rightsholders to expand the benefits of this agreement to users around the world.
Google Book Search
Google Books has some interesting stuff - for example, the full text of Catherine Parr Traill's Backwoods of Canada. Google Books Backwoods of Canada
Of course, Backwoods of Canada is also available for free in Project Gutenberg but I don't think it is as easy to search the book with the Project Gutenberg and it isn't as pretty!
